The advancement of air transportation has made it easier for people to pursue opportunities abroad. As a result, studying medicine abroad, specifically MBBS, has become a more common choice among Indian students. However, the question arises whether this trend is a result of students setting a new trend or following an existing one. According to the National Medical Council (NMC), formerly known as the Medical Council of India (MCI), there are only 542 government and private colleges in India offering a total of 79,855 seats for the year 2020 to students who have cleared the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET). This number is a small fraction of the total number of students who appear and qualify for NEET every year. Out of the 15 lakh students who qualified for NEET-UG in 2019, only about 80,000 students were able to secure a seat in government-authorized colleges and universities in India. This limited number of seats in good institutions, along with the commercialization and privatisation of the education sector in India, has led to a decline in the quality of education in the country.
